Docusate sodium is not a laxative; laxatives stimulate the intestinal walls, contracting muscles to clear the bowels (Reference 5) rather than working directly on the stool. docusate sodium Adults and children age 12 and older: 50 to 200 mg P.O. daily until bowel movements are normal.
