In the course of his research on the origins of Theodor Fontane's ballad, "John Maynard," Norman Barry has come across three German ballads and a poem about Westphalia that have some relevance. In der Ballade John Maynard, die 1886 von Theodor Fontane geschrieben wurde, geht es um John Maynard, einen Steuermann, der ein Schiff, das mitten auf dem See Feuer fängt, ans rettende Ufer fährt und so hunderte Menschen rettet, selbst jedoch stirbt John Maynard zwar die Krone, aber von einer Erhebung seiner Seele zu Gott ist nichts zu lesen. Dass dieser Lohn John Maynard nicht mehr erreicht, ist Fontane bewusst. Darin besteht das Tragische seines Heldentums.
